St. Thomas More / Colombia Sin Fronteras
Annual Sponsorship Fair
April 29-30, Colombia Sin Fronteras (Colombia without Borders) Literacy School will host a Sponsorship Fair fundraiser at St. Thomas More to seek sponsors for the annual cost of a child’s participation in the after-school and preschool programs provided each day for about 300 children in a small, very poor village outside of Santa Marta, Colombia. In existence for over ten years, Colombia Sin Fronteras is essentially a community center that offers programming for toddlers to teenagers to augment school and promote literacy and academic success in a quest to break the cycle of poverty. It is a positive, nurturing environment that also fosters character and confidence building. The program, which includes a meal each day and tutoring, also offers programs like music, cultural dance, and soccer. Most importantly, it is a place where the kids feel loved and a sense of hope and stability.
Colombia Sin Fronteras Literacy School is a US-based nonprofit organization started by Brigitte Ponce, a local Catholic Parishioner with a woman onsite in Santa Marta who runs the center and all of the programming. Most of these children and their families were forced to flee from their homes to Santa Marta because of the civil war that took place in Colombia. Most have never recovered.
